Centro

In the middle of the main financial area of the city, remains the legacy of our rich history.

The name of the neighborhood (center) cannot be used as geographical reference because it doesn’t have a central position in the map. It is where Rio de Janeiro was born.

The development of the city began with the arrival of the royal Portuguese family in 1808. D. João VI changed the configuration of the city to support 15000 people who became from Portugal with him.

Other great change has passed in the beginning of the XX century. The mayor Francisco Pereira Passos decided to modernize the area, very colonial at the time. Inspired in the big “boulevards” made by Haussmann in Paris, he opened the Avenue Central, today known as Av. Rio Branco crossing the entire neighborhood becoming close with how it looks today. He also opened the Av. Beira-mar connecting Centro with the south zone, places like Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon.

Rich in historical buildings, museums, ancient churches, together with the sky scrapers in the heart of the financial center, the neighborhood is one of the most interesting in town with an easy access by the subway, facilitating your visit.

Easy-Rio prepared a guide to visit the main attractions divided by three routes. Check it out: Centro
